Military Watch Straps: Function, History, and Design

The term military watch strap is often used to describe any one-piece strap, but in reality there is a wide range of designs, each originating from different military branches and countries. Ground forces traditionally relied on the NATO strap (or its U.S. equivalent), aircrew commonly used the Bund strap, and divers generally wore standard NATO straps. However, in some navies—most notably the French Navy—divers adopted a highly specialised design known as the Parachute Elastic Strap, often referred to as the Marine Nationale strap.

All military straps share the same fundamental purpose: practical, necessity-driven design. The Parachute Elastic Strap was first seen on Tudor watches but also appeared on ELVIA and various other watches issued to French military personnel.

Origins of the Parachute Elastic Strap

The Parachute Elastic Strap dates back to the 1950s. Some divers used Perlon straps made from woven nylon fibres, while others ingeniously repurposed elastic webbing taken from reserve parachute harnesses. These elastic straps—commonly khaki-green with a yellow stripe, though produced in several colours—proved flexible, resilient, and comfortable, particularly when worn over a wetsuit.

Because they were made from issued materials, they were also a practical and economical solution for military divers.
